Things to do in Port Stephens: Kayaking and Paddleboarding

There’s so much to love about Port Stephens. Growing up here, I’ve come to cherish every sunrise, every salty breeze, and every adventure this beautiful place has to offer. With a bay two and a half times the size of Sydney Harbour and the largest sand dunes in the Southern Hemisphere, Port Stephens is like a natural playground. Whether you’re into parasailing, surfing, or hiking, there’s always something to do—but for me, it’s all about being on the water.

Discovering My Passion for Paddleboarding

Why I Love Paddleboarding

If there’s one thing that’s captured my heart, it’s stand-up paddleboarding (SUP). There’s nothing quite like it. On calm mornings, I’ll head down to the bay, grab my board, and paddle out into the quiet. The water’s so still it looks like glass, and the way the sunrise paints everything gold? Pure magic. Sometimes I’ll see a pod of dolphins swimming alongside me, their fins slicing through the water as if they’re saying hello. It’s these little moments that remind me how lucky I am to call this place home.

My First Paddleboarding Experience

When I first tried paddleboarding, I was all over the place—wobbly knees, shaky arms, the works. But it didn’t take long to get the hang of it, and now I can’t imagine a better way to start the day. It’s not just fun, it’s also a great way to clear your head. And honestly? It’s a pretty good workout too—your core will thank you.

Kayaking in Nelson Bay: A Classic Adventure

Growing Up with Kayaking

While SUP is my go-to, kayaking in Nelson Bay is another classic way to enjoy the water. Growing up, my friends and I would grab our kayaks and head out for mini adventures. We’d explore hidden coves, paddle through mangroves, and even race each other to see who could reach the shore first. There’s something so freeing about just being out on the water, especially when the bay is alive with wildlife. From playful dolphins to gliding rays, there’s always something to see.

A Great Place to Start

If you’re new to kayaking, Nelson Bay is a great place to start. The waters are calm, and there are plenty of places to rent gear or join a guided tour. It’s the perfect mix of fun and relaxation, and it’s a great way to explore the area at your own pace.

More Ways to Experience Port Stephens

Beyond the Paddle

Even though paddleboarding and kayaking are my favorites, there’s so much more to do here. The Stockton Sand Dunes are incredible for sandboarding or quad biking, and the hiking trails around Tomaree Head offer some of the best views in the region. If you’re into wildlife, dolphin and whale-watching tours are a must. And for a real treat, grab some fish and chips at the marina and enjoy them by the water. Trust me, it tastes even better with the ocean breeze.

Refueling After a Day on the Water

Where to Eat

After spending a morning paddling, there’s nothing better than grabbing a bite to eat. Port Stephens has no shortage of great spots to refuel. Personally, I love the local seafood—fresh prawns, oysters, and fish straight from the bay. Whether you’re at a waterfront café or a casual fish-and-chip shop, you’re in for a treat.

Why Paddleboarding and Kayaking are the Heart of Port Stephens

Connecting with Nature

For me, stand-up paddleboarding and kayaking aren’t just activities—they’re a way of life. They’re about slowing down, appreciating the beauty around you, and finding joy in the simple things. Whether it’s your first time on a board or your hundredth, there’s always something new to discover out on the water.

A Unique Perspective

If you’re planning a trip to Port Stephens, I can’t recommend paddleboarding or kayaking enough. They’re fun, easy to learn, and offer a perspective of the bay you just can’t get from the shore. So grab a paddle, hit the water, and see why so many people fall in love with this slice of paradise.

Ready to Paddle?

Whether you’re exploring solo or joining a guided tour, there’s no wrong way to experience the magic of Port Stephens. From calm bays to hidden beaches, every paddle is an adventure waiting to happen. So pack your sunscreen, bring your curiosity, and get ready to create memories you’ll never forget.
